Why Molten-Splash Screens Are Critical for BOF Converter Zones?
Inside a 300-ton basic oxygen furnace (BOF), a 1,650 ℃ bath of carbon-rich molten steel is literally minutes away from becoming high-grade coil. Yet every tilt of the vessel-whether for charging scrap, injecting oxygen, or tapping finished metal-unleashes a storm of radiant heat and liquid projectiles. During tapping alone, 4–6 tonnes of melt per minute race through the runner at 5 m s⁻¹, hurling droplets and slag chips up to 8 m from the tap-hole. Infrared radiation levels peak at 30 kW m⁻², enough to cause second-degree burns in under 1.5 seconds and to ignite cotton overalls instantly. Traditional canvas curtains char, shrink and become additional fuel; water-cooled panels are too bulky to follow the ladle crane. The 1.0 mm thick fabric reflects 90 % of incident radiant heat while withstanding direct melt contact at 1,700 ℃ for 45 seconds without degradation. Stainless-steel edging and Kevlar thread prevent edge-ignition, giving a service life of 7,000 cycles-four years in a two-vessel shop operating 24/7. Despite their thermal robustness, the screens weigh only 1.2 kg m⁻² and can be deployed on telescopic rails or quick-release roller frames, allowing operators to drop a barrier into place within 20 seconds of a tilt signal. This mobility is critical: BOF campaigns run continuously, and any delay for curtain repositioning would interrupt oxygen blowing and cool the bath, costing thousands of dollars per minute.
Beyond operator safety, the screens protect sensitive equipment. Infrared cameras, laser level gauges and hydraulic hoses that control vessel tilts would otherwise degrade under continuous IR load; replacing them requires entering the 60 ℃ upper platform during a shutdown. By lowering the radiant temperature on the operator's face by 15 ℃, the screens also cut heat-stress breaks and allow longer tapping sequences, boosting overall shop throughput by up to 2 %. Lightweight, quick-release and durable, molten-splash screens turn the BOF converter zone from a burn hazard into a controlled, efficient workplace-essential for any high-temperature boiler aiming for safety, yield and operator confidence in the modern steel industry.
